Over the weekend, nearly a dozen juveniles were arrested in Washington, D.C. after a series of violent disturbances known as “teen takeovers.” The incidents involved groups of teens allegedly fighting in the streets and attacking police officers.

The Chaos Begins

The disturbances began around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, when police were called to multiple locations in the southwest part of the city, according to FOX 5. Investigators said large groups of teenagers had gathered in areas near the Navy Yard and the Wharf, both of which were close to curfew zones set up by authorities for the weekend.

A local resident told FOX 5, “They’re coming from Maryland, they’re coming from Virginia, they’re coming from all over just to be disrespectful here in Ward Six, we’re like some ‘Meeting Zone.’”

Multiple Arrests After Fights Break Out

The first fight occurred in the 1300 block of Canal Street, where a 17-year-old boy, a 15-year-old girl, and a 12-year-old girl were taken into custody. Minutes later, another fight broke out near First Street and N Street SW, leading to the arrest of a 15-year-old boy for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

Around 9 p.m., a third large altercation broke out in the same area, during which multiple juveniles began attacking officers. Two girls, aged 15 and 16, were arrested for fighting in public, while two 14-year-olds—one boy and one girl—were charged with assaulting police officers, fighting, and resisting arrest.

A bystander recorded video footage showing a group of juveniles throwing punches on the street, with one group surrounding an officer before running in different directions.

Total Arrests and Public Reactions

By the end of the weekend, eight teens were arrested in connection with the violence, according to FOX 5. One local resident expressed concern, saying, “The parents need to get more involved, you know. Kids are going to be kids, but the parents really, really need to focus on what their children are doing.”

Curfew and Restrictions in Place

The disturbances took place while the Department of Parks and Recreation was hosting evening events for teens on Friday and Saturday. At the same time, five juvenile curfew zones were put in effect across the city over the weekend.

These curfew zones prohibit anyone under the age of 18 from gathering in unsanctioned groups of nine or more in public spaces. In addition, a citywide curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. was enforced.

The Juvenile Curfew Second Temporary Amendment Act of 2025 allows authorities to establish curfew zones in high-volume areas to ensure public safety.

City officials are also considering extending their authority to enforce teen curfews when the current law expires next month.
