A shocking case from Ohio has ended with a long prison sentence for a man who carried out a brutal and life-threatening attack on his ex-wife. The incident, described as extremely violent by the court, has left a deep impact on the victim and her family.
Brutal Attack Inside the Home
The case involves 66-year-old Frederick L. Harroff, who attacked his ex-wife in June 2025. According to court records, the assault began late at night when the woman was resting in her home.
Harroff reportedly returned to the house after taking pills and started threatening her. Soon after, he began beating her with a wooden baseball bat.
The victim later told the court that the attack lasted for nearly an hour, during which she fought to survive.
Multiple Attempts to Kill
The violence did not stop with the initial assault. The victim shared that Harroff used several methods in an attempt to kill her.
She said he placed a rope around her neck and tried to strangle her. He also attempted to tie her up and continued to threaten her life throughout the incident.
At one point, he even set the house on fire, saying they would both die in the flames.
Despite the extreme danger, the woman managed to escape through the back door and ran to a neighbour’s house for help.
Police Response and Arrest
When police arrived, they found clear signs of a violent struggle inside the home. The bed was covered in blood, and a rope was found nearby.
Harroff had already fled the scene, but officers located him hiding in a wooded area close to his property. He was found with injuries, including blood and burn marks, and was taken into custody.
Court Proceedings and Guilty Plea
In March, Harroff pleaded guilty to several serious charges. These included attempted murder, aggravated arson, felonious assault, kidnapping, and strangulation.
The case was heard in Columbiana County, where Scott Washam delivered the final sentence.
Judge Orders Long Prison Sentence
The judge sentenced Harroff to a minimum of 39 years in prison. Depending on certain conditions, this could extend up to 44 and a half years.
This sentence was much higher than what prosecutors had suggested, which was between 20 and 25 years.
The judge described the attack as extremely violent and said the actions were “vicious and horrific.”
Victim’s Emotional Testimony
During the hearing, the victim shared her experience in detail. She described the fear and pain she went through while trying to survive.
She also spoke about how her life has changed since that night and called Harroff a cruel and dangerous person.
Her family also supported her in court. One relative said that despite everything, the attacker did not break her spirit.
Defendant’s Statement
Harroff spoke during the hearing and said he was sorry for what happened. He claimed he did not fully remember the incident and said he was not in the right state of mind at the time.
The court also considered his background, including his military service and lack of a previous criminal record. However, the seriousness of the crime led to a strict sentence.
