A tense situation at a public event in Louisiana has led to an arrest after a man was accused of displaying a firearm in a crowded space. The incident caused panic among attendees and raised concerns about safety at community gatherings.
What Happened at the Event?
According to the West Monroe Police Department, officers were called to a disturbance at the West Monroe Convention Center on March 23, just before 8 p.m.
The event was a basketball gathering, and a large number of people were present at the time.
Details from Surveillance Footage
Police reviewed surveillance video from the location, which reportedly showed a man taking a handgun out of a backpack and placing it into his waistband.
Once people nearby noticed the weapon, panic spread quickly. Many attendees began running away, and several left the venue entirely out of fear.
How the Suspect Was Identified
Authorities said a complainant helped identify the suspect by providing a nickname and a phone number. Using this information along with the video footage, officers were able to confirm the identity of the individual.
The suspect was identified as 23-year-old Lazarus Ray Burks.
Arrest and Charges
Burks was arrested on April 21 and taken into custody. He has been charged with one count of felony menacing.
He is currently being held at a correctional facility with a bond set at $8,000.
