A disturbing incident at a Delaware Hyatt led to the arrest of a man who allegedly confessed to killing his 72-year-old grandmother in one of the hotel rooms. Dempsey Fritchey, 30, has been indicted for the first-degree murder of Elizabeth Fritchey, according to the Delaware State Police.
Man Confesses to Hotel Staff About Killing Grandmother
On January 29, at approximately 5:45 p.m., hotel staff at the Hyatt House in Lewes, Delaware, were approached by Dempsey Fritchey, who told them he had killed his grandmother.
The Hyatt House is located on Five Points Square, near Delaware Bay. Police arrived at the scene and spoke with Fritchey, who allegedly reiterated his claim that he may have killed his grandmother.
Victim Found Injured in Hotel Room, Dies Days Later
Following the confession, police officers entered the hotel room where they found Elizabeth Fritchey unconscious and suffering from severe injuries to her face and head. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for life-threatening injuries. Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries and passed away on February 10.
Details of the Assault and Arrest
Delaware State Police investigators learned that the assault occurred while the pair was staying together in the hotel room. For reasons still unclear, Dempsey Fritchey allegedly attacked his grandmother, using his hands and feet. Afterward, he reportedly went to the hotel lobby to tell staff about the violent incident.
Dempsey Fritchey was initially charged with felony assault. However, following the death of Elizabeth Fritchey, he was indicted for first-degree murder. He is currently in the custody of the Delaware Department of Correction.
