A 24-year-old woman has died after falling from a rocky ledge while hiking in Russia’s Irkutsk region.
According to a regional branch of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, the incident happened Sunday near the White Cliffs close to Usolye-Sibirskoye.
Authorities said the woman had been taking photographs while standing on a ledge before attempting to climb back down.
Ground Gave Way During Descent
Investigators said the ground beneath the woman reportedly collapsed as she descended from the rocky area.
She fell and suffered severe injuries.
Emergency crews responded to the scene, but the woman died while being transported to the hospital in an ambulance.
Investigation Into Accident Underway
Officials said witnesses are still being interviewed as investigators work to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal fall.
Authorities are also deciding whether a criminal case will be opened.
The area near the Belaya River is considered a popular tourist destination.
Series of Similar Accidents Reported
The tragedy is one of several recent fatal falls reported in Russia involving cliffs and mountainous areas.
Earlier this year, a man reportedly died after falling from a viewing platform near Sochi.
Another 24-year-old woman also died in Dragon’s Mouth Cave near the Adler district during a climbing incident.
Last year, a 21-year-old tourist died near Lake Baikal after reportedly attempting to jump across a crevice in the mountains.
American Tourist Also Reported Dead in Scotland
The report also comes after authorities in Scotland said they believe they found the body of Timothy Rosser, a 60-year-old American tourist who disappeared while hiking near the dangerous Aonach Eagach ridge.
According to Police Scotland, remains believed to be Rosser’s were discovered Sunday. Officials said the death is not being treated as suspicious.
