A woman from Pennsylvania is accused of pretending to have cancer to get money from her community, which she then used for trips abroad.

Vanessa O’Rourke Accused of Fake Cancer Scam

Vanessa O’Rourke, reportedly in her late 30s, is wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for wire fraud. She allegedly told family, friends, and people in her community that she had glioblastoma, a deadly form of brain cancer. She claimed she needed money for experimental medical treatments in Australia.

But according to the FBI, O’Rourke never had brain cancer. Instead, she traveled to Australia, where she allegedly went on vacation.

How the Scam Worked

The FBI said O’Rourke started her scam in October 2015. She told people she had glioblastoma and needed money for treatment in Australia. She continued this until July 2016. During that time, she did travel to Australia in April 2016. But the FBI said she spent her time there on leisure activities and did not receive any medical treatment.

Authorities also said O’Rourke made a second trip to Australia. Again, she reportedly went on holiday and did not get any treatment for her supposed illness.

Community Fundraisers and Donations

When O’Rourke returned to Harleysville, Pennsylvania, she convinced people to hold fundraisers for her. A GoFundMe page raised nearly $12,000 from over 140 donors. Additionally, a local restaurant hosted a fundraiser in her honor.

The scam ended when authorities arrested O’Rourke in May 2018. She was charged with 15 federal counts of wire fraud in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Reports suggest she may still be out of the country, likely in Australia.

FBI Seeks Help

The FBI is asking anyone with information about Vanessa O’Rourke to contact one of its field offices or the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

This case is a reminder to always verify fundraising campaigns and personal stories before donating, no matter how convincing they may seem. It highlights the importance of awareness and caution in supporting charitable causes, especially online.
