A tragic accident in Memphis has left a woman dead after being struck by a drunk driver while stranded on the side of the road. The incident has led to serious charges against the driver, Daniel Thomas, who faces multiple offenses in connection with the crash.
The Incident
On the evening of Thursday, April 18, 2024, a woman’s car broke down while driving on Union Avenue, a major road in Memphis. According to authorities, the woman pulled over to the side of the road and activated her hazard lights to signal distress.
While standing outside her vehicle, the woman was struck by a Honda Pilot driven by 67-year-old Daniel Thomas. Authorities say Thomas hit the woman’s car first before striking her as well.
The crash occurred around 9 p.m., and police were called to the scene shortly after. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and police arrested Thomas following their investigation.
Charges Against the Driver
Thomas, who appeared to be under the influence, has been charged with vehicular homicide in connection with the crash. In addition to the homicide charge, he faces several misdemeanor charges, including:
- DUI (Driving Under the Influence)
- Reckless driving
- Public intoxication
- Driving without a license
Thomas reportedly admitted to having consumed several alcoholic drinks before the crash. Further investigation revealed that he also tested positive for 1.6 grams of THC after a blood test at a nearby hospital.
Investigation and Arrest
Police described Thomas as smelling of alcohol and performing poorly on a field sobriety test. Based on these findings, he was taken into custody and booked into jail. Authorities have confirmed that Thomas will face arraignment on Monday, with his bail being reviewed the following day.
