A heartbreaking murder case in Missouri has left a community mourning the loss of a man family members describe as gentle, caring, and deeply loved by everyone around him. Alonzo McDaniel, 65, was allegedly stabbed to death by his wife, Evelyn McDaniel, after years of what relatives claim was ongoing emotional and physical abuse inside their relationship.
The tragic incident happened in north St. Louis last month and has shocked neighbours and loved ones who say Alonzo spent years quietly enduring threats and mistreatment while refusing to fight back.
According to court documents and statements from family members, Evelyn McDaniel has now been charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the deadly stabbing.
Family Says Abuse Had Been Going On for Years
Alonzo McDaniel’s family claims the violence and abuse inside the marriage had been happening for a long time before the deadly incident occurred.
His sister, Tina-Marie McDaniel, said relatives repeatedly encouraged him to leave the relationship because they feared something terrible would eventually happen.
According to her, Evelyn McDaniel allegedly threatened Alonzo multiple times over the years, but he continued staying in the relationship despite concerns from family and friends.
Tina-Marie described her brother as a peaceful and gentle man who never wanted to use violence against his wife, even during arguments or difficult situations.
She said he believed in staying calm and avoiding physical confrontation no matter how intense things became inside the home.
Friend Heard the Alleged Attack Over the Phone
One of Alonzo McDaniel’s close friends, James Moton, revealed that he was speaking to him on the phone shortly before the fatal stabbing happened.
Moton said he could hear Evelyn McDaniel yelling in the background while the couple argued. Moments later, he reportedly heard Alonzo scream in pain.
According to Moton, he heard Alonzo shout, “Why you just stabbed me? You stabbed me!” before the phone suddenly went silent.
The emotional moment has deeply affected Moton, who described Alonzo as more like a brother than a friend.
Police documents later stated that Evelyn McDaniel allegedly admitted to stabbing her husband in the chest during the April 23 incident.
Family Says Alonzo Refused to Fight Back
Tina-Marie McDaniel said her brother was physically much larger than his wife but never used his strength against her.
According to family members, Alonzo stood around 6-foot-3 while Evelyn McDaniel was approximately 4-foot-7. Despite the size difference, relatives insist he never attempted to physically harm her.
His sister believes Evelyn took advantage of his calm personality and his refusal to retaliate during arguments.

According to Tina-Marie, an argument escalated inside the house before Evelyn allegedly began attacking Alonzo with a knife.

Neighbours and friends described Alonzo McDaniel as someone who constantly helped people in his community.
Reports say he worked as a truck driver and was widely respected throughout the neighbourhood for his kindness and generosity.
People who knew him said he regularly mowed lawns for elderly neighbours free of charge, checked on residents after storms, helped families with groceries, and mentored local teenagers.
His family said he was always willing to help others no matter the situation and often put other people’s needs before his own.
Tina-Marie described her brother as caring, supportive, and loved by everyone on the block.
Charges Filed Against Evelyn McDaniel
Following the investigation, authorities charged Evelyn McDaniel with second-degree murder and armed criminal action.
She is currently being held without bond while the case moves through the legal system. Officials have not yet announced a court date.
