A man already serving multiple life sentences for a deadly crime spree in Delaware is now standing trial in Pennsylvania for four additional murders, including the killing of his own mother and a Dunkin’ manager. Prosecutors allege that the defendant carried out a series of violent crimes across two states in 2021, leaving multiple victims dead over several months.
Pennsylvania Murder Trial Begins
Keith Gibson, 44, is facing trial in Philadelphia County on charges related to the deaths of four people: Roy Caban, Eric Flores, 40-year-old Christine Lugo, and his mother, 54-year-old Christine Gibson.
According to prosecutors, the killings were part of a broader pattern of violence that stretched across Pennsylvania and Delaware during 2021.
The trial has drawn significant attention because Gibson has already been convicted in Delaware for separate murders committed during the same period.
Previous Convictions in Delaware
Before the Pennsylvania trial began, Gibson was convicted for what Delaware authorities described as a violent and cold-blooded crime spree.
According to the Delaware Department of Justice, Gibson was found guilty of murdering 28-year-old Leslie Ruiz-Basilio during a robbery at a Metro PCS store in Elsmere, Delaware, in May 2021.
Authorities also convicted him of killing 42-year-old Ronald Wright during another robbery less than a month later.
Investigators said the crimes were followed by additional robberies, assaults, weapons offences, and an attempted murder involving other victims.
The Delaware convictions resulted in multiple life sentences.
Criminal History Before 2021
Court records show that Gibson had previous encounters with the criminal justice system before the alleged 2021 murders.
According to correctional officials, he was convicted of manslaughter and a firearms offence in 2010. After serving time in prison, he was released in 2020.
Although he later served additional time for violating probation, authorities say he was back on the streets by January 2021.
Prosecutors argue that the killings in Pennsylvania began shortly after his release.
Two Men Killed in Philadelphia Store
Authorities allege that on January 28, 2021, Gibson entered a store in Philadelphia’s Germantown neighbourhood where Roy Caban and Eric Flores were present.
According to prosecutors, Gibson fatally shot both men inside the business.
Investigators have not publicly disclosed a detailed motive for the killings, but the deaths became the first of several murders attributed to Gibson during the months that followed.
The double homicide remains a central part of the current trial.
Prosecutors Say Defendant Killed His Own Mother
Less than two weeks after the Germantown shootings, prosecutors allege that Gibson murdered his mother, Christine Gibson.
Authorities say she was working inside a community centre in Philadelphia when she was fatally shot.
Investigators believe her son was responsible for the killing. However, prosecutors had not yet formally charged him with the crime when he allegedly continued committing violent offences in Delaware.
The allegation that Gibson killed his own mother has become one of the most disturbing aspects of the case.
Dunkin’ Manager Allegedly Killed During Robbery
Prosecutors also accuse Gibson of murdering Christine Lugo, a Dunkin’ manager in Philadelphia.
According to authorities, the incident occurred on June 5, 2021, at a Dunkin’ restaurant located on West Lehigh Avenue.
Investigators allege that Gibson forced Lugo to open the cash register and hand over approximately $300 during a robbery.
After taking the money, prosecutors say he shot Lugo and fled the scene.
The killing shocked the local community and became one of the most widely publicised crimes linked to Gibson.
Arrest Came Days Later
Authorities say Gibson’s alleged crime spree came to an end several days after the Dunkin’ shooting.
Investigators in Delaware arrested him after a robbery at a Rite Aid store in Wilmington. Police alleged that he assaulted and pistol-whipped a store clerk during the incident.
His arrest allowed investigators in both Pennsylvania and Delaware to connect him to multiple violent crimes committed across state lines.
Since then, prosecutors have continued building cases related to each of the alleged murders.
Families Seek Justice in Court
As the trial moves forward, relatives of the victims have attended court proceedings to witness the case firsthand.
Family members say they hope the trial will provide an opportunity for their loved ones’ stories to be heard.
Christine Lugo’s daughter, Frances Rodriguez, told local media that the victims and their families deserve justice and the chance to explain how the crimes affected their lives.
Her comments reflected the emotions shared by many of the families impacted by the alleged killings.
