Heavy rain and storms across the Baton Rouge area caused widespread street flooding Sunday, leaving multiple vehicles stranded and thousands of residents without electricity. Authorities say high water levels forced drivers to abandon vehicles on several major roads as emergency crews monitored flooding conditions throughout the region.
Flooded Roads Reported Across Baton Rouge
Severe rainfall led to flooded roadways in Baton Rouge, where several vehicles became stuck or were abandoned due to rising water levels.
According to the city’s traffic incident reporting system, at least nine vehicles were stalled or left behind as drivers attempted to navigate flooded streets.
Video footage from areas near Louisiana State University showed vehicles partially submerged in water, with flood levels reaching up to the hoods of some cars.
Officials warned drivers to avoid flooded roads and turn around rather than attempting to drive through high water.
High Water Reported on Several Major Roads
The St. George Fire Department highlighted several locations experiencing dangerous flooding.
Some of the most affected areas included:
- Bluebonnet Boulevard at North Oak Hills Parkway
- Coursey Boulevard between Shadeland Drive and Sherwood Forest Boulevard
- Sherwood Common Boulevard at Airline Highway
- Jefferson Highway at McCaroll Drive
Emergency crews advised motorists to avoid these areas while water levels remain high.
Flooding Also Reported in Livingston Parish
Flooding was not limited to Baton Rouge.
Officials in Livingston Parish also reported high water on several roads.
Authorities announced that Hood Road and Eden Church Road were temporarily closed because of flooding.
Local government crews were deployed to monitor culverts and drainage systems to help water flow away from roadways.
Thousands Lose Power During Storm
The severe weather also caused power outages across the region.
According to Entergy, thousands of residents were left without electricity.
Power outage reports included:
- About 2,360 customers without power in Livingston Parish
- Nearly 2,000 customers without power in East Baton Rouge Parish
Officials said a fallen tree damaged an electrical conductor, contributing to the outages.
Utility Crews Working to Restore Power
The Town of Livingston released a statement acknowledging that many residents lost power during the storm.
Local officials said they were working closely with Entergy to resolve the issue.
Utility crews were also coordinating with CN Railroad teams to safely repair the damaged electrical equipment.
At this time, there is no estimated timeline for full power restoration.
Officials Urge Drivers to Use Caution
Authorities are reminding residents to stay alert during heavy rainfall and avoid flooded roadways.
Driving through high water can stall vehicles or lead to dangerous situations, especially when the depth of water is unknown.
Emergency officials also encouraged drivers to follow road closures and monitor local traffic alerts while storms continue moving through the region.
