The Riverside Academy Rebels spring sports teams had an amazing week.
The Rebels baseball team picked up a much-needed win on Tuesday, the softball team won a huge rivalry matchup on Wednesday, and the track team had a strong showing at its second meet of the year.
The baseball team has had its struggles this season. On March 15 the team finished in a 0-0 tie with Catholic of New Iberia, then lost to to South Lafourche 8-5 on March 16. The team returned home on Tuesday to host Pope John Paul and lost 5-4 in nine innings. But the next day the Rebels hosted the East Ascension Spartans and came away with a 4-3 win. Gage Thompson got the win on the mound, allowing two runs and four hits over six innings. He struck out six and walked three. Cameron Matt scored two runs. Brody Vicknair had two hits and drove in two runs. The Rebels will host Ellender Saturday at 3 p.m.
On Wednesday, March 22, the Lady Rebels softball team took on St. John Parish rival, St. Charles Catholic and came away with a 4-1 win. The game was tied 1-1 heading into the seventh inning when Chloe St. Pierre hit a 2-run home run to break the stalemate. Kylie Bordelon got the win in the circle. She struck out seven batters and walked none. This brings the Lady Rebels to 11-5 on the season.
The Rebels track team had a great outing at the Lutcher Derbingy Relays on Wednesday, March 22. The results follow:
In the women’s 1600, Kasey Bourgeois placed fifth with a run of 6:47.37. She ran the 3200 for the first time and finished with a time of 16:30.47.
In the women’s 100 and 200-meter dash, Mia Saijas placed fourth with times of 13.19 and 27.49.
In the women’s 300-meter hurdles, Whitney Hughes placed fifth with a run of 57.35.
Bayli Melancon was sixth in the high jump with a jump of 4-6.
Kayden Ceaser finished 10th in the women’s discus with a throw of 68-4 and ninth in the javelin with a throw of 67-10.
Ella Champagne was 11th in the javelin with a throw of 65-3.
Jaelyn Buter was 11th in the women’s discus with a throw of 68-1.
Sage Morton was seventh in the shot put with a throw of 27-1.
Sarah Jones was fourth in the high jump with a jump of 4-8 and fifth in the triple jump at 29-1.
In the men’s 110-meter hurdles, Jaedon Butler placed fourth with a time of 17.57. He also was 10th in the 400 meters with a time of 56.22 and eighth in the triple jump with a jump of 36-0
Chaz Evans was seventh in the 100 meters with a time of 11.54. Calvin Zenon was 11th with a time of 11.70.
In the men’s 200 meters, Dedric Lastie ran a time of 24.52 and Jace Trosclair ran 24.99. Trosclair was ninth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 48.83 and Cobey Wahden was 11th with a time of 50.22.
Preston Brown was 12th in the 400 meters with a time of 57.74. Peyton Maxie was 11th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:53.45.
David Ray ran the 1600 in 7:01.94.
The men’s 4×200-meter relay team finished fifth with a time of 1:36.33. The 4×800-meter relay team finished sixth with a time of 10:50.73.
In the men’s shot put Noah Trepagnier placed second with a throw of 43-07. He also placed third in discus with a throw of 108-02.
Dernell Arline was sixth in the high jump with a jump of 5-4 and Lincoln Scott jumped 4-10.
Chaz Evans was 11th in the long jump with a jump of 18-5.
Derron Simmons was ninth in the triple jump with a jump of 25-7.5.
Cooper Emmons was seventh in the javelin with a throw of 97-10. Craig Matt was 11th in the javelin with a throw of 78-2.
Ahmad Cage was 14th in the shot put with a throw of 32-0.
