The Riverside Academy baseball team celebrated its regional victory with principal Holly Haase.

When it comes to the playoffs, you can throw out the teams’ records.

Riverside Academy certainly is proving that after reaching the quarterfinal round of the Division IV Select playoff bracket with a record of 7-18-1.

The Rebels, the last team to get a spot in the bracket at No. 20, defeated No. 4 seed Vermilion Catholic 3-2 Friday night in Abbeville. Sophomore pitcher Jayce Ruiz threw a complete game, allowing four hits, striking out nine and walking two. He also had one of the Rebels’ two hits for an RBI. Brody Vicknair also had a hit. But it was Ayden Bullock’s bases-loaded walk which drove in the winning run in the sixth inning.

The Rebels will face No. 5 Central Catholic of Morgan City Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Amelia Recreation Center. The winner of that game will advance to the State Tournament in Sulphur.
